Teachers in Henrico County who have yet to be given accommodations for online teaching are expected to back working in schools by November 30.
Andy Jenks, the Chief of Communications and Community Engagement for HCPS, informed individual principals of this in late October. The message began to leak to teachers soon after and they reacted with some surprise, with the Henrico Citizen reporting of some of them taking to social media. They expected to have been made aware of this during the virtual meeting held a day before Jenks told the principals about the plan.
Elementary schools in Glen Allen can expect their students and teachers to return to class on 30th November. When asked about why all teachers will return on this date, Jenks said:
“The staffing is necessary on multiple wavelengths, which includes an expansion of our ‘limited-in-person’ options for middle and high school students, even before the second semester arrives.”
Most of the secondary school students will not be assimilated into normal school life until February, although exceptional students from grades 6-12 may return as early as December 7. Students have the option of staying at home or returning depending on how their parents feel about it. Back-to-school campaigns often include products like promotional Pens.
School officials are sending out surveys to see how the parents feel about letting their children go back to class. Teachers got a similar survey that assessed whether they feel confident about teaching in person or if they would prefer accommodations for teaching online.
