A selection of schools near Glen Allen have new boundaries following a vote last week.
The Henrico School Board voted on the matter last Thursday, January 28, and went unanimously in favor of the redistricting proposal, which will have an impact on several of the county’s schools.
The main purpose for changing the boundaries was to relieve overcrowding issues at certain schools. Colonial Trail and Rivers Edge elementary schools were experiencing high levels of overcrowding and the change relieves some of the pressure. Students from Twin Hickory, Springfield Park, Kaechele, and Longan will also be shifted to new schools. Under the new plan, four neighborhoods have been removed from Colonial Trial’s zone and replaced by four other communities.
The changes may not be enough to deal with the overcrowding at Rivers Edge on their own. One of the board members stated that the board intends to deal with that problem by adding more classrooms to one of the schools in the region. Jackson Davis and Longan are scheduled to be rebuilt in the next few years and that plan includes increasing their capacity. Graphic design can illustrate future projects like these.
The redistricting plans were also designed to make the most out of the new Holladay Elementary School, which will be twice as large as it was before. Work at the school is currently ongoing and it is expected to be completed and ready to take in students by the fall.
