The festival is a family-friendly event which features more than 50 local inventors, artists and entrepreneurs. Activities include FIRST robotics demonstration as well as interactive workshops dealing with art, science and technology. The Glen Allen event is the first edition of MakerFest after five years of dormancy, with previous editions of the event attracting as many as 9000 attendees and featuring crafts such as printmaking, metalworking and glassblowing, frequently with live demonstrations. The event’s mission statement says its goal is:
“To break down the silos between existing makers and maker groups to encourage a collaborative DIY community in Metro Richmond and surrounding cities.”
Confirmed exhibitors include Glue Craft Studios, family craft company First & Third Co., button makers Silver Tree Art, and robotics competition RABID – Richmond Area Bot Instigated Destruction. The event focuses on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities and education. “Maker” culture and hobbies involve businesses ranging from blacksmiths to glassblowers to Print shops, and focus on creativity and discovery. This year’s MakerFest will feature the theme of “Resurgence”, emphasizing the event’s return after its hiatus.
The 2024 RVA MakerFest will take place at Deep Run High School in Glen Allen on November 2.
