After medical issues prevented the singer-songwriter Tom Paxton from taking the stage himself, a Glen Allen concert will pay tribute to him with a number of musicians.
The concert, called “An Evening of Folk Music” was originally set to include performances by Paxton himself, but it will instead be headlined by two of his collaborators in Grammy-winners Cathy Fink and Marxy Marxer, who are noted for their harmonic voices and recently released a joint album with Paxton. The two vocalists will be supported by a folk band including banjo, mandolin, and ukelele. Also among the musical support will be bassist Ira Gitlin, fiddler Bryan McDowell, and local singers Susan Greenbaum and George Turman.
The ensemble will be performing songs from throughout Paxton’s sixty-year musical career, which included standards like “Bottle of Wine”, “The Last Thing on My Mind” and “Whose Garden Was This.” His songs are especially known for their performances by well-known folk and country artists ranging from Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan to Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash. Tribute concerts like this are often promoted through methods such as poster printing and radio advertisements to reach fans of legendary artists and recognize valuable behind-the-scenes contributors.
“An Evening of Folk Music – Celebrating the Music of Tom Paxton” will take place at the Cultural Arts Centre in Glen Allen on March 14.
