The public is urged to only call 911 if there is a life-threatening emergency. When the dispatchers answer, they will ask a few more questions so that they are better prepared to respond to the emergency.
Alec Oughton, who serves as a Fire Chief, explained:
“Henrico is committed to protecting the health and safety of our community during this unprecedented event. We ask the public to help us by calling 911 only for life-threatening emergencies and to remain patient, as we have modified some of our responses.”
The county did not give details about exactly which questions would be asked, however it is believed to be similar to a system that was implemented in Chester County a few weeks back. The Richmond Police Department gave details on social media about additional questions that will be asked on emergency calls that require a policeman to be at the scene. Residents of Henrico towns such as Glen Allen are requested to dial (804) 501-5000 for non-emergencies. An emergency medical technician or a nurse will answer to help the caller with the situation and give guidance on how to proceed.
