The Henrico Extension Bug Bizarre is a chance for the local community to come together and celebrate the fun of studying insects and other arthropods.
The event is free and open to the public. People from nearby towns such as Glen Allen can attend the festival to see a large number of insect displays and enjoy the numerous activities set up for children. Several groups and organizations will set up displays of mounted and live insects from all over the world. Some of the bugs expected to be on display include tobacco hornworms, mosquitoes, parasitic wasps, many types of cockroaches, beetles and spiders that are kept at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Kester Lab. Attendees will also be able to get a close look at a honey-making beehive.
One of the show’s most attractive features is the “Roach Race”, which features Madagascar hissing cockroaches. The Virginia Department of Forestry will also be providing in-depth information on forest pests such as the emerald ash borer, which was recently confirmed to be found in Henrico County. Local bug specialists can take this event as a chance to hand out Business Cards to interested parties. Special gardening groups will be teaching farmers how to grow milkweed in order to attract monarch butterflies.
The event will be held this Saturday, September 14 at the Deep Run Recreation Center at 9900 Ridgefield Parkway. Admission is free for everyone who wishes to explore the mysteries of etymology.
