People living in Ashland who want to travel to the western part of the United States will now be able to catch a flight from the nearby Richmond International Airport.
United Airlines recently announced that it will have a daily flight between Richmond and Denver International Airports. The flight was made possible by one-time contributions of $45,000 each from the City of Richmond, Henrico County, and Chesterfield County, along with $15,000 from Hanover County.
The federal Department of Transportation is adding to those funds with $750,000 and additional marketing and other in-kind donations of $85,000 will be provided by the Airport Commission to reduce economic risk encountered by United Airlines in establishing the new route.
According to a transportation economist at the University of Richmond, George Hoffer, this shows great progress in opening up the area to the western part of the country. John Vithoulkas, Henrico County Manager, was applauded by county officials and business leaders when he mentioned the new flight at a State of the County meeting.
An Embraer EMB 175 plane with 76 seats will be the aircraft used for the flights, which will leave from Denver in the morning and from Richmond in the afternoon.
The flight is scheduled to begin on April 5 and United may be turning to a local Print company to print materials with more information about the time and cost of the flight.
