Classic Western screening in Ashland
The Ashland Theatre is screening the Western film Winchester ‘73 this October.
The film is part of a series of screenings at the theatre being offered for just 75 cents admission throughout the year, with one classic film from 1950 each month from now until
August 2026.
The itinerary of classics comes after the theatre held similar monthly screenings of films from 1948 and 1949 in recent years.
Winchester ‘73 is notable for helping to revitalize the career of its star, James Stewart. At the time, Stewart’s career was on a downbeat following a series of post-World War II flops. However, Winchester ‘73 marks the first of eight collaborations with director Anthony Mann, reforming Stewart’s wholesome Hollywood image by taking on edgier roles in the latter part of his career.
A noir-infused Western, Winchester ‘73 is the tale of man, played by Stewart, who wins a gun in a contest, only for it be usurped by the runner-up contestant. The incident kicks off a series of events in which Stewart’s character traces the gun’s location and the trail of chaos left in its wake, as the weapon changes hands from one doomed owner to the next.
