Americana quintet to serenade Ashland

The sounds of The Steel Wheels will fill the air at a September concert at the Ashland Theatre.

The five-person band operates in the Americana genre, with musicians bringing a range of instruments inspired by the folk roots of the Virginia mountains, including the mandolin, banjo, and fiddle.

An early version of the band was formed in 2005 under the name of the lead singer-songwriter, Trent Wagler, with Jay Lapp and Eric Brubaker providing backup vocals and instrumentation.

The band rebranded to The Steel Wheels in 2010. Down the road, two more band members joined – drummer Kevin Garcia and rhythm guitarist Jeremy Darrow. Their albums have included 2010’s Red Wing, 2017’s We Came Here, and 2019’s Over Tte Trees.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the band took an introspective approach to quarantine, focusing on songwriting based on stories about not only their own lives, but the lives of fans. Carrying a community theme, the album came out in 2020 as Everyone a Song, Vol. 1. A sequel game in the form of Everyone a Song, Vol. 2 the following year.
