The Ashland Theatre is hosting a concert featuring an Allman Brothers Tribute band this July.
Skydog: An Allman Brothers Tribute is based in Richmond, Virginia. Like the band it pays homage to, Skydog incorporates elements of improvised jam sessions on stage, blues, folk and rock.
The original Allman Brothers Band helped put the Southern rock genre on the map in the 1970s with hits such as “Eat a Peach” and “Fillmore East.”
Skydog’s lineup includes bassist and vocalist Jeremy D. Simmons, keyboardist Joey Ciucci, percussionists Jason Neal and Dusty Ray Simmons and guitarists and vocalists Willie Williams and Brian Fones. The musicians are former members of bands that include DJ William Proekt, Lee Roy Parnell, Carbon Leaf, the Cris Jacobs Band and Dickey Betts’ Great Southern.
The band doesn’t merely create note-for-note recreations of the Allman Brothers’ albums. Rather, Skydog is known for leaning into the live performance element, mixing up the tunes in impromptu ways, similar to the Allman Brothers’ own approach to concerts. Like the Allman Brothers, Skydog uses Guitar harmonies and dual drummers set against a backdrop of keyboard grooves to create its sound.
