Ashland celebrates Independence Day with costume contest

Ashland is starting the America’s Independence Day celebrations with a parade downtown in July.

Hosted by the Hanover Arts and Activities Center, this walking parade features a concert by the Hanover Concert Band at the facility’s front yard.

With America-themed pet outfit competitions, snacks like hamburgers, hot dogs, and apple pies, and colorful facepainting and snow cones, the event has a special nod to this year’s milestone anniversary.

On July 4, 1776, the Founding Fathers adopted the Declaration of Independence, and when that date turns on this year’s calendar, it will hit 250.

True to the theme, there will be a baking contest for apple pies, followed by a pie auction.

However, the true showcase this year, in acknowledgement of America’s 250th birthday, is a costume contest with the theme of “Founding Fathers and Mothers.”

While people often cite men like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson as Founding Fathers, in full credit to them, women also played essential roles in the American Revolution. For instance, Betsy Ross, who sewed the first United States flag.

Under the apprenticeship of a popular Pennsylvanian upholsterer, Ross became a highly skilled seamstress while learning to repair things like bedcovers, curtains, tablecloths and rugs.

Parades like this may choose to use banner printing to create Signs for marching troupes and floats.

Ashland’s 4th of July Parade and Celebration is happening from 8 am to 11 am at 500 S Center St in Ashland on America’s Independence Day.
