What's Happening in Ashland, VA…

Ashland will soon be filled with the harmonic vocals of The Kingston Trio when the band performs at the Ashland Theatre this fall.

The trio’s original claim to fame came in the late 1950s/early 1960s during the peak of the golden age of American folk, with hits such as Greenback Dollar and Tom Dooley.

The original members were Dave Guard, Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds, all of whom have since passed away. However, the band is still going strong as they now have new members with connections to the original members. The current lineup is Mike Marvin, Tom Gorelangton and Buddy Woodward.

Original member Reynolds served as a father figure and musical teacher to Marvin, and they are cousins. Gorelangton, a childhood friend of the original members, also recorded with Reynolds.

Woodward, the newest member in the current Kingston Trio lineup, has ties to the same classic era of folk of the original band. Woodward’s mother was part of the folk group The Mark III trio, a band for which his father had auditioned. Though he didn’t make the band, the senior Woodward later interrupted a performance of Worried Man at a gig to propose to her, despite the band’s banjo player being her boyfriend at the time.

The Kingston Trio is performing on October 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ashland Theatre at 205 England St. in Ashland.
