What's Happening in Ashland, VA…

A venue in Ashland is screening the classic film Rashomon as part of its 1950’s Monthly Movie Series, where the tickets are 75 cents.

Now in its third year, the monthly classic film series began in August 2023, where it screened 12 films from the theatre’s opening year of 1948. Then, beginning in August of 2024, 12 films were screened from 1949.

This time around, the classic monthly film series began in August 2025, with all 12 entries of the season featuring films from 1950.

Rashomon, based on a short story of the same name, is a classic murder mystery film of Japanese cinema. Directed by Akira Kurosawa and starring Toshiro Mifune, the film tells the story of a crime from the point of view of four different people.

The film won an honorary Academy Award for being the best foreign language film that year to be released in the U.S.

The film’s non-linear structure, using multiple points of view to tell an overlapping series of events, became highly influential in movies and TV shows. The Social Network and the works of director Quentin Tarantino are among the most notable examples of modern films that pay homage to it.

Movie events like this may choose to use poster printing to designate which film is playing in each screening room and for low-cost promotion.

Rashomon is screening on February 9 at 7 p.m. at the Ashland Theatre, 205 England St., Ashland.
