Local shelter is big winner in funding competition

Bandit’s Adoption and Rescue of K-9s based in Ashland recently won the contest for the Animal Planet Pet Shelter Renovation.

This means that the kennel will receive $180,000 for renovations to its facilities. Known as BARK and named in honor of a neglected dog, Bandit, who was rescued in 1987, the facility is a safe haven for neglected and abused dogs on a big piece of property in Ashland. More than 300 dogs are rescued every year, coming from other shelters and often being within 12 hours of being euthanized.

Voting was held online on a period of three weeks and the shelter was up against others in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Illinois, and Florida. BARK had to submit a video of the renovations that would be done should it win the funding.

According to a member of the BARK board, Claire Tetrick, the win came as quite a surprise.

The main kennels are in need of repair, and a modern heating and air conditioning environment for the dogs is also needed. Furthermore, there is a need to fortify the bridge going into the kennel and install drainage in the outside playpen area.

Tetrick commented that BARK is appreciative of all the support it had from the community through the voting period, which may have been garnered by the printing of Flyers and other materials that could have been sent out the community encouraging them to vote for the kennel.
