Ashland variety show icon celebrates 50 years of music

Ashland audiences who know Bubba Johnson from his roles in the Ashland variety show may not realize that he celebrated 50 years of musical performances in September of this year.

Performing at the Jerusalem Baptist Church on September 17, he thanked the audience for their support over all the years.

As part of the performance performance, Johnson released his fourth CD, appropriately titled My 50-Year Journey. He also arranged for many local musicians to join him for the performance, as well as the Omega Sisters, who have previously been back-up vocalists at events and performances. When releasing records, many artists use premium booklet printing to create notes discussing their history within music and the chosen songs.

Johnson told the Herald Progress that he cannot believe he’s been singing for 50 years. He says he likes making music, and making people smile.

Born in Hanover, Johnson was singing regularly at 17 and wrote his own music and lyrics by the time he was 22. He did not perform his own work until much later, however, and his first CD was released relatively recently in 2001.

Johnson has received numerous awards for his work, including Endsound Music Awards Traditional Gospel Artist of the Year award, and a nomination for the Newsome Gospel Awards Best Gospel Group/Duo in 2005.
