Ashland looks to rebuild community theater

The Ashland Town Council recently met to discuss a proposal for the renovation of the Ashland Theater.

At the meeting, Joshua Farrar, the Deputy Town Manager and Finance Director, presented the Ashland Community Theater Foundation (ACTF) Capital Plan and Fundraising Narrative, wherein the ACTF is determined to raise $200,000 for renovations.

All grant money it receives would go towards the physical renovations of the theater and not for operating capital or soft costs. It would use a business model in which ticket sales, as well as food and alcohol sales, would support ongoing expenses. In addition, the ACTF plans to include a 501c3 component so that grants and donations can also go towards operating revenue.

The Industrial Redevelopment Fund has also given the Town of Ashland a $500,000 grant to purchase an adjacent property that would be developed into a restaurant. This was met with some consternation by the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), which asked for revisions to the proposal.

According to Mayor George Spagna, the committee is preparing a revised proposal to address the concerns of the DHCD so it can receive a favorable response and proceed with the new plan.

The ACTF may look to the services of a local Print company so that materials can be printed and distributed throughout the town to get feedback for writing the proposal so the theater can remain a valuable community resource.
