Ashland kids invited to explore Virginias wild side

This summer, kids in Ashland are invited to learn more about the natural world around them, and the local library can help.

The Richard S. Gillis, Jr. Ashland Branch Library has organized nature Backpacks, which can be signed out by area families. Each can be borrowed for up to two weeks, and will be filled with information, including details about the 36 state parks that can be found throughout Virginia. Each will also include a parking pass that is good for any one of these state green spaces, as well as pocket guides for insects and other invertebrates, field guides about birds, mammals, animals tracks , trees and other plants and more. The Port-A-Bug kit will allow kids to get a better look at bugs, and there will also be a dip net, magnifying lens and an activity booklet.

Along with all of the above, the Backpacks will all include a card that outlines ethics for those who explore the natural world. Families are asked to only borrow one at a kit at a time, and reminded to have fun while exploring all Virginia’s wild side has to offer. Brochures and other printed items that give further details about the parks can also be included in these types of explorer packs for kids.

The Bags will be available throughout the summer months, and anyone who would like to find out more can do so by visiting the library’s website.
