Ashland gym to hold novice weightlifting competition

The United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) will be organizing a contest in February at the Iron Built Gym in Ashland.

The USPA Virginia Novice Open is a competition where weightlifters can face off in event categories such as Full Power, Deadlift Only, and Push Pull. The program is open to competitors who have competed in two meets or less and have never placed in the top three. Participants will be placed into groups based on age and weight class. Qualified lifters who compete in classes with five or more people will receive an award for Best Lifter.

The USPA is a powerlifting federation that was created in 2010 to provide weightlifters with opportunities to showcase their abilities in safe environments. The association is open to both novices and elite-level lifters. The current president of the powerlifting organization is Steve Denison, and the vice president is Mike Tronske. Adult memberships to the federation cost $80 per year, and youth memberships for those 13-17 cost $45 per year.

The novice competition will be held on Saturday, February 18 and will begin at 8:00 am. Registration for the weightlifting contest will close on January 27. All participants are required to be weighed on February 17 to determine their weight class. Organizations that put together athletic competitions like this can attract more competitors by advertising the event with flyer printing.
