A Greater Texas Foundation grant of $3.1 million has been awarded to Tyler Junior College (TJC) and two other community colleges in Texas to pioneer a Rural College Promise program.
The largest award given by the Foundation during the current year of funding, the goal of the Rural College Promise program is to increase access to affordable pathways to college and opportunities for jobs that provide a living wage in rural counties in East Texas.
TJC will not only support local communities and students but will also work with North Central Texas College and Grayson College to develop a scalable and affordable model for rural communities in Texas, and a blueprint for use elsewhere in the United States.
In 2014, TJC launched the first rural community-based promise program, the Rusk TJC Citizens Promise, in Texas and expanded it in 2016 as the TJC Promise. The six-year program runs from ninth grade through the first two years of college and rewards academic performance, strong attendance, and community service.
Encouragement and support from dedicated success coaches is given to students who carry out the requirements of the Promise program so they can obtain a certificate or degree from TJC. Fees and tuition are covered by the program for up to two years by scholarships from TJC and federal grants, as well as scholarships that specifically support the Promise program.
