More than $19,000 in honors and competitive scholarships have been awarded to students from Tyler Junior College (TJC). These funds have come from programs of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and have earned these students national recognition for service, leadership, and academic achievement.
Students from the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at TJC earned eight All-Texas Academic Team honors in addition to several other scholarships at the national level after competing against 3,000 applicants across the country. The program honors high-achieving students from community colleges who are making meaningful contributions to local economies and addressing critical needs in the workforce. Several of the recognized students are already creating significant impact beyond the classroom.
News of such recognition can be spread throughout a college community with flyer printing.
Dr. Juan E. Mejia, president and CEO of TJC, said that the accomplishments of the students reflect the personal stories and determination that is behind each achievement. He added that although there are close to 20,000 students each year at the college, it is ultimately the individual; story of each student that makes the difference.
Advisor for the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Gig Deik, said this year was momentous with an unprecedented number of scholars earning scholarships. Deik added that TJC is the only college in the area to have multiple recipients of these national scholarships.
