Tyler opens new police training building

The new Police Training Facility of the Tyler Police Department is now open.

This is regional hub that is designed to expand instruction for fitness, officer training, and academic programs for agencies in East Texas.

The facility is on E. Commerce Street and spans 10,600 square feet. It includes 4,000 square feet of space for offices and classrooms and a gym that is 6,000 square feet in size. Physical fitness, defensive tactics, restraint control training, and jiu-jitsu will be done in the new gym. The facility will host in-service training for officers from agencies across the region and police academy classes. The benefits of such new facilities can be promoted throughout a city and region with flyer printing.

Jimmy Toler, Chief of the Tyler Police Department, said that many years of planning went into this new facility as the department works to expand its role as a provider of training in the region. Toler added that this is the next step for the department with the goal being to bring world class training not only to the city but to the entire region.

Edward Broussard, Manager of the city of Tyler, said this building will also help to streamline the more than 700 hours of training before joining the department as well as the 40 hours of annual service training needed every year.
