The second extension of Legacy Trail No. 1 in Tyler is now open.
The extension adds about 1.7 miles to the existing trail and runs from Pete Elementary School to Winters Park. Recreational areas, schools, and neighborhoods are now connected, and it offers a safer route for pedestrians, cyclists, students, and families.
Local Print shops can provide Flyers and other printed materials to highlight such trails and their features.
The Legacy Trail System, of which this extension is part, runs from Gresham to Fresh. Officials from the city said that the cost of the extension was about $2.7 million and took two years to complete. A grant from the Texas Department of Transportation and a half cent sales tax funded the project.
Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Tyler, Leanne Robinette, said that this was a long project that took two years to complete. Robinette expressed her excitement about seeing people out on the new extension and that everyone is very much looking forward to enjoying it.
City leaders emphasize that expanding the Legacy Trail network remains a top priority, enhancing the quality of life and public safety for residents through safer, more connected walkable and bike-friendly pathways across the community.
The trail corridor will also become the future site of Stewart Park. This will be the first new addition to the park system of Tyler in decades. Construction is slated to begin this spring.
