Trolley Museum completes expansions to ferry fairgoers
Canonsburg visitors to the Washington County Fair will have the option of dodging busy traffic and utilizing the park ‘n’ ride service offered by the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum.
Work started immediately after the 2018 county fair on the fairgrounds' platform project. The first order of business for the trolley museum was to enlarge the bridge that leads to the Washington County Fairgrounds. Next the platform was expanded from 585 square-feet to its present 1,870, which allows for two trolleys to be accommodated on either side of the tracks.
The trolley museum was established in February 1954 in Chartiers Township with a total of three trolleys. Over 30,000 guests visit the museum each year to see the now 52 cars housed there.
Scott Becker, the museum’s executive director, became the first paid employee for the museum 26 years ago. Today, 150 volunteers keep the museum running.
Sometimes museums, much like businesses and individuals, use business cards to keep in touch with stakeholders.
According to Becker, about 10 percent of the 70,000 county fair visitors utilize the trolley. The cost is $3 a head for everyone four years old and over. Admission to the fair will be an additional $10 daily admission.
Tickets for the trolley can be purchased August 11 – August 17. Trolleys will begin running at 10 am through 11 pm and will make the trip every 10 to 15 minutes.
