Fun for youngsters in Canonsburg
An upcoming event in Canonsburg will allow children to have fun but remain safe at the same time.
The AHN Canonsburg Annual Trunk or Treat is a variation on the traditional Trick or Treat practice that has been ongoing for decades. However, instead of going from house to house, sometimes in neighborhoods they don’t know, children in Canonsburg will go from vehicle to vehicle, hence the name.
Trunk or Treat is thought to have begun sometime in the 1990s with various church groups who organized these events as an alternative to Halloween. The concept caught on and now is practiced throughout the country by organizations of all kinds, from churches to scout troops to neighborhood associations.
Trick or Treat is not a new concept, it dates back approximately 2,000 years to Samhain, a Celtic holiday. Like the Mexican Day of the Dead, ancient Scottish and Irish people held the belief that the veil between the living and the dead grows thin, and demons can return to earth. The Celts began dressing up to blend in with others and avoid these spirits.
Trunk or Treat will be held from 5.00 pm until 6.30 pm on October 24, at Canon-MacMillan High School in Canonsburg. When outdoor events like this are planned, organizers will often contact a printer, who can use banner printing to create sturdy, seasonal decorations for the occasion.
