The Washington County Health Center is a nursing facility in Chartiers Township, Pennsylvania that provides care to everyone in Washington County, such as people in McMurray and Canonsburg.
Commission Chairman Larry Maggi said of the center:
“We’ve been able to subsidize it with gas and oil money, and we’ve tried multiple solutions, spending money trying to save it on consultants and accountants.
“A sale is a last resort. It’s not an easy decision. It’s one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make as a commissioner. We wanted to make sure we did our due diligence before we even explored the possibility.”
The possibility of selling the Washington County Health Center has been brought up before, but the Service Employees International Union is heavily considering it this time around. The facility has not seen any profit since 2010, and its debt has now reached $13,460,726. Out of the 16 Pennsylvania counties that have facilities, four are already going through the process of selling, or are considering selling, health centers.
Dawn Futrell, who is an administrative organizer for the Service Employees International Union, hopes that the employees will continue to protest the idea.
