A robotics team from Newark’s Granville Middle School is goings south of the board to teach fifth- and sixth-graders there about coding, as well as Lego robotics.
The Granville team, known as ‘The Book Dragons’, will be traveling to the city of Tepotzotlan, which is located in the state of Mexico (a separate entity within the country of Mexico), to work with 44 students at Colegio Juan Pablo II school.
The Book Dragons are giving a class in Lego Robotics to Licking-area students in grades one through four that will help them to raise money for their trip. Print shops can help in situations like this by helping organizers create course materials.
The team decided to go to Tepotzotlan because Book Dragon Tessa Quijano’s grandmother lives there. The team recognizes that teaching in a different country can pose language problems, but they found a way to solve the problem, because Tessa is fluent in Spanish. Not only that, but some of the other Dragons know a bit of the language.
In addition, some of the Mexican students speak at least a small amount of English, and are looking forward to speaking the language with their teachers.
The Book Dragons’ class ‘Introduction to Lego Robotics and Programming’ is set for March 25-27, from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm, at Granville Elementary School. The fee is $45 per person, and interested parties need to register by this coming Friday, March 22, at Granvillerec.org.
