What's Happening in Newark, OH…

Newark honors legacy of early area residents

An early January event is a celebration in tribute to the people who built the structure that is the center of the Newark venue where it will take place.

Honoring the First Peoples is an experience that is providing an educational look into the lives of the Indigenous population that originally lived in the area. An interpreter will guide guests around the property, explaining the history and the believed reasoning behind the structures that are built there. The fact that the sites are still standing points to the people who made them having at least some knowledge of the soil and how to use it to make the projects last. Guests will also be able to hear about what is planned for the future.

Octagon Earthworks is the venue for the event. It is one of several locations under the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks umbrella. There are a total of eight unique areas the HCE oversees, with each structure being a different shape. The celebration will be marking the first year of this particular location being under the HCE’s management. There will be a variety of activities for different age groups, making it an experience that families can enjoy together.

Breakfast will be available inside the venue’s Visitor Center.

Attending Newark the event is free for all. Flyer printing is a common promotion technique for special activities from local spaces. The celebration is scheduled to take place between 10:00am and 4:00pm on January 2nd.
