Newark event puts cultural twist on festive classic

A Newark venue is mixing together a popular, cultural dance with an equally beloved holiday tale.

The Irish Nutcracker is a show being put on by performers from The Irwin Academy of Irish Dance. It tells the story of The Nutcracker, the Tchaikovsky ballet featuring a young girl named Clara who goes on a special journey through the Land of Sweets. The Nutcracker is a longstanding holiday tradition amongst the dance community, but this version of the show includes the art of Irish step dancing.

Irish step dancing is an umbrella term covering several styles of dance, some of which are performed using softer shoes, while others require harder shoes in order to produce the sound often associated with the artform. These dances include multiple jigs (the slip, the treble, and the light), as well as the reel, the traditional set, and the hornpipe.

The venue is Newark’s Weathervane Playhouse. Tickets are sold both through the venue’s website and the box office, with prices ranging between $16 and $36. The show is appropriate for families. Many performances from local groups will turn to advertising methods such as flyer printing.

There are three showings in total - December 12th at 7:00 pm, and December 13th at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. The show has a listed runtime of two hours.
