Newark welcomed a new small bookstore in July, when Kicks Mix opened in the city’s small downtown area. Diana Shannon and Mary Spain are co-owners of the store, and report that many people were delighted to find an independent bookstore coming to town.
Spain and Shannon primarily sell Books, but the store also carries CDs, DVDs, and vinyl albums. The co-owners say they cannot buy new vinyl, DVDs, or CDs as cheaply as people can find them online, so they are selling only used items.
Despite the rise of online bookstores in recent years, Kicks Mix is not an aberration but a reflection of a trend, according to Oren Teicher, CEO of the Ameircan Booksellers Association. Teicher says that dozens of new small bookshops are opening all the time, and their sales are rising.
He says that the shop-local movement is also to be credited for this increase, but the biggest reason is that patrons like to go to a place where they can pull Books off the shelves, browse through them, and discuss them with knowledgeable staff members. Such interaction is not possible in any other setting.
Kicks Mix could work with brochure printers to create a booklet for patrons that lists the current stock by sections, and gives reviews of selected works for patrons to enjoy.Get a Free Quote for Books
