Yonkers walking workshop explores magic of mushrooms

A Yonkers walking workshop will introduce some of the more common species of fungi, showing the substantial role the organisms play in the natural world.

Untermyer Gardens is home to many species of fungi, and many of them live in a symbiotic relationship with trees and other plants, meaning they benefit one another. The outing, which will be on offer in September, will see Vincent Galatolo sharing this expertise.

The walk will visit some of the venue’s wilder areas, and everyone will be on the lookout for fungi as they go. Galatolo will provide details about their life cycle and ecology, and also which trees they are found in association with.

The activity may be of interest to foragers and those who just enjoy learning about nature. Sturdy shoes, a hat, and a bottle of water are all recommended. Emails will be sent out to the registrants in case the walk has to be cancelled due to poor weather.

Many people enjoy learning about the natural world around them, and a workshop provides an opportunity to do so. Field guides and other items for a class can be prepared by Print shops that offer a range of binding options

This in-the-field introduction to fungi and their role in nature is scheduled for Saturday, September 13. It will take to the trails at 945 North Broadway at 10:00 am.
