Fungi make the world go around, and a Yonkers walk will put these often unseen organisms in the spotlight.
The wild spaces on Untermyer Gardens will be receiving a visit by a group on the hunt for mid-summer fungi. The instructor for the session will be Vincent Galatolo, the New York Botanical Gardens Horticulture Division’s Director of Plant Health who holds a passion for mushrooms.
The group will be introduced to the species of fungi they encounter, and they will learn how they help to break down organic matter so that it can be reused and recycled by plants. Some trees depend on fungal partnerships for survival, and the participants will also discuss how some mushrooms are popular wild food and have even been cultivated, while others are bioluminescent. The focus of the activity will be the types of fungi most commonly found in the northeastern part of the USA.
When foraging for fungi, accurate identification is vital, especially if they are being used for food. Field guides may be helpful for this, and can be prepared by area Stationery printers.
This opportunity for the public to discover the world of fungi growing right in their own home area will be on offer in Yonkers’ Untermyer Gardens Conservancy on Saturday, July 13. It will depart at 10:00 am.
