Horseshoe crabs have been around since before the dinosaurs, and a Yonkers area event will pay tribute to these humble and often misunderstood arthropods.
The shoreline at Marshlands Conservancy provides habitat for horseshoe crabs, and to help raise awareness of them, it has organized ‘Day of the Horseshoe Crab;”. During the activity, the attendees will learn about these creatures, including how their blood has been used in the development of a variety of vaccines and medications that have saved human lives.
The group will head to the shore to view the “crabs” (they are not actually part of the crab or crustacean family) as they spawn during the high tide. Everyone who takes part is advised to wear comfortable clothing that they won’t mind getting dirty, and they can expect to get their feet wet. They will be able to ask the facilitator any questions they might have during the one-and-a-half-hour running time.
Learning about a particular animal can help the public to develop a greater appreciation of both them and the other creatures that share their world. A brochure printing company will be able to prepare publications to hand out during a learning-focused activity.
The Marchlands Conservancy in Yonkers will be offering this glimpse into the hidden world of horseshoe crabs on June 11. It is located at 220 Boston Post Road in Rye, and the function will begin at 9:00 am.
