Yonkers to build first new fire station since 1980

A new firehouse is on the way for Yonkers.

Mayor Mike Spano recently made the announcement about the building plans, and noted that it will be the first one to be installed in 35 years.

This new facility will be a replacement for Station 1, which is currently located on New School Street. That structure has been in use for more than 90 years, but was recently condemned due to issues such as cracks in the exterior walls.

According to Mayor Spano, the repair of rebuilding of the Forestation 1 was cost prohibitive, so it was decided that the construction of a new one made more economic sense. He pointed out that it will be a state-of-the-art facility that is efficient and in line with current firefighting practices.

The last station to have been built in the city was Fire Station 8, which sits at Warburton Avenue and was erected in 1980.

The site for the new station has not yet been determined. A committee will look into the issue and will release its final results at a later date. Once it has completed the research, a catalog printing firm will be able to compile the results into a publication that can be made available to the public, who may wish to know more about the project.

It is expected that the fire station will be complete by 2018.
