The students were taking part in a STEM program, lasting nine weeks, at the Sarah Lawrence College Center for the Urban River at Beczak (CURB).
On May 1, a group of 30 put on tall wader boots and climbed into the Hudson River to participate in a seining activity. Seining is a type of fishing using a drag net.
The students who participated in the STEM program were chosen for it based on displaying a scientific interest. According to a press release, the program aims to:
"…infuse interactive activities into the focuses of inquiry-based science, scientific research, math skills and research writing."
Although the current program is over, students who enjoyed their time in the river and in CURB will have a chance to continue with a summer program. The Yonkers school district and Sarah Lawrence could use printing companies to spread the word to other scientifically-mind middle school students about the program and its upcoming events.
The Summer STEM Environmental Program is open to the students who participated in the spring program from schools including Eugenio Maria de Hostos Microsociety School, Yonkers Middle/High School, and Enrico Fermi School.
