Yonkers school scores points with pro basketballers

At the end of January, students at Yonkers' Charter School of Educational Excellence got to learn more about what it takes to be a physically fit basketball player.

Members of the Westchester Knicks, a new team in the National Basketball Association's developmental league, paid a visit to the 225 students in grades six through eight on January 29. The players talked to the students about the importance of eating a healthy diet and other ways to stay healthy.

Three players, Marcus Ginyard, Darnell Jackson, and Markeith Cummings, stopped at the school to spend time with the students. After their presentation, the students had the opportunity to ask the players questions. Most of the queries focused on the players themselves and how long they had been playing basketball. Jackson, for example, informed the students that he had been with the NBA for four years.

The charter school is taking additional steps, beyond encouraging pro basketball players to stop by, to get kids into health and nutrition. It might consider using poster printing to create Posters highlighting healthy foods and ways to stay active. So far, the school has banned sugary drinks from its cafeteria.

Every week, it holds ‘Smoothies Fridays’ to encourage students to eat a nutritious breakfast. A team of volunteers shows up at the school to help prepare 300 smoothies for the kids in less than hour.
