This year's sale, which is the 16th one, will feature edible native plants, as well as ornamentals. The organizers of the sale can use a local Print company to produce pamphlets about the variety of plants on offer. Along with well-known fruits, such as cranberries, strawberries and blueberries, edible plant options at the sale will include less recognized options, such as prickly pear, ramps, and Jerusalem artichokes.
The director of the Native Plant Center, Carol Capobiano, told the Yonkers Daily Voice:
"More than one-third of all US households garden for food. But, none of the most popular foods that are grown in the US are native species."
The goal of the Native Plant Center is to encourage people to grow more local edible plants, which not only look nice, but also tend to do well in the area.
Some highlights from this year's sale include common elderberry, which produces edible berries and flowers, and Canada violet, the flowers of which are edible. Ornamental plants on offer will include phlox, beebalm, and hyssop.
People who have questions about growing native plants, or about which ones, to choose can speak with the native plant specialists on hand throughout the sale.
The sale is on April 25, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Members of the Native Plant Center get a sneak preview, starting at 9:30 am.Get a Free Quote for Print
