Yonkers residents encouraged to donate shoes to help pets

Throughout the month of September, the best place for an old pair of shoes is not the trashcan, but the Yonkers Animal Shelter.

The shelter is accepting donations of sneakers, boots, and other types of shoes from the public. The shoes will not be used at the shelter or worn by the dogs and cats in need of a home. Instead, the shelter plans on selling the donated footwear to a company that will pay by the pound for them.

Proceeds from the sale of the shoes will allow the shelter's staff to provide training to the animals, to help them thrive in their future forever homes. The money will also be used to spay or neuter the pets where necessary.

To advertise the shoe drive, the shelter could use postcard printing and distribute the cards to homes and businesses throughout the city. Any shoes collected during the donation drive will ultimately end up at charities that need them.

Residents of Yonkers have until September 20 to donate any shoes they no longer want or wear. Donations can be brought directly to the shelter, which is open on weekdays from 11:00 am until 3:30 pm, and on weekends from noon until 3:30 pm. Along with shoes, the shelter is always in need of old towels, blankets, and pet food.
