Christopher Johnson, a member of City Council, and Mike Spano, the Mayor of Yonkers, named a part of Gold Street in honor of Winston K. David. David was an immigrant to the US and worked throughout his life to help members of the African-American community in the city.
The stretch of street from Warburton to Woodworth Avenue will now be officially known as Winston K. David Place.
Whenever a street is renamed, town officials can work with Print companies to produce new Signs to clearly mark the street and to let people know of the reason for the name change.
David moved to the US in 1960, settling in Yonkers, where he worked at Brooks Memorial Home. He was also involved with several organizations in the area and sponsored the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day breakfast at the Nepperhan Community Center.
Among his contributions to his community was providing assistance to people who were returning to society after being incarcerated. He helped to provide education to people in mortuary services, so that they had some way of earning employment.
Speaking during the naming ceremony, Mayor Spano said:
“Winston left a legacy of commitment to the residents of our city and is sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Fortunately, this street will forever be a special reminder of how impactful his name was in the City of Yonkers.”
