Yonkers project to study elusive eels

A Yonkers area project will gather data about this a fascinating aquatic species, and is seeking local volunteers.

The American Eel Migration Project is a multiyear effort that will explore the life cycle of eels, much of which is still something of a mystery. The activity will have a focus on the ones that return to the Hudson River, and the Center for the Urban River at Beczak (CURB) will be facilitating the effort.

Those who are interested can participate in one of the eel counts scheduled for late February until May and they will take place in the afternoons. A net will be spread to catch “glass eels,” meaning young transparent eels going through the metamorphosis process. The data collected will be pooled with other research results and used to help protect the species, and learn more about how its life cycle and migration habits.

The listing posted for this volunteer activity states that previous experience or knowledge of eels is not necessary. Environmental service groups often offer their helping hands special Corporate Gifts printed with their logo or other graphic design to thank them for their efforts.

CURB, which can be found at 55 Alexander Street in Yonkers, will have this project on offer from Monday, February 27 until Friday, May 26. All help will be appreciated.
