At the end of October, Leake & Watts, a foster care organization in Yonkers, held its annual fundraising gala.
This year's awards gala brought in $550,000, which the agency will use to support the 11,000 children, families and adults it serves throughout New York.
Although the goal of the evening was to raise money in support of the agency, which offers foster care and child welfare services, as well juvenile justice service and early childhood programs, the gala also served as a time to recognize the work of its supporters.
Joyce Coppin Mondesire was the main honoree for the evening. Coppin Mondesire has been a member of Leake & Watts' board of directors since 2005. She received the Thelma Stackhouse Award. In addition to her years of service to Leake & Watts, Coppin Mondesire has worked with the New York Department of Education for 46 years.
Agencies that help to serve the public can use Brochures to educate people about what they do and who they serve. They can also use stories from the people they have helped serve.
One of those stories was told by a young woman who was helped as a child by Leake & Watts. She was in the agency's foster care program and was able to successfully apply to, enroll in, and graduate from college. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in social work.
