Throughout the month, migratory birds will be traveling through Yonkers and the surrounding area, on their way to their breeding grounds.
To honor the traveling birds, International Migratory Bird Day is usually observed the second Saturday in May. This year, the Lenoir Preserve in Yonkers, as well as four other area nature centers, will host special programs and bird walks on May 9 and 10.
The goal of International Migratory Bird Day is not only to education the public about the environment and about the needs of birds, but also to celebrate conservation efforts around the world.
The bird walk in Yonkers will take place at 8:00 am on May 10. The Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, which is sponsoring the event, can use an area printing company to spread the world and to let people know what to expect and bring.
Although there is no way to say for sure what birds will be seen during the walk, it is likely that hawks, warblers, and passerines will make an appearance. People should bring along a pair of binoculars to get a good view of any birds that do appear.
The walk is open to people of all levels of experience birding, from beginners to advanced, and will take place rain or shine. Admission to the event is free.
