Specifically, the organizations are looking for three teachers who teach in the city's public schools to name as Teachers of the Year for 2017. Teachers can be nominated for the award by administrators, parents, students, and fellow teachers. The goal of the award is to celebrate those teachers who go above and beyond to provide an excellent education to their students.
Although the nominations can come from the public, it is a team made up of Kiwanis Club members and trustees from the Board of Education who pick the winners.
Organizations that distribute awards can use Brochures to explain the criteria for nomination, and to encourage people to submit names for nomination.
In the case of the Yonkers award, one teacher each from the elementary, middle, and high school levels will be recognized. To be eligible for nomination, a teacher must have worked in the Yonkers Public School system for at least five years and must demonstrate dedication to teaching.
Speaking about the award, Yonkers mayor Mike Spano stated:
"Teachers do some of the most important work in our community and they deserve to be recognized with honor . . . these awards are a gesture of thanks for positively impacting our children's lives."
Nominations are being accepted online until March 1.
