Yonkers installs smart parking meters

Drivers in Yonkers will soon no longer have to dig for quarters and change when parking on the street.

The city is in the process of updating its parking meter technology, so that drivers can use a mobile app to pay for parking. So far, the city has installed 33 parking meters that work with Parkmobile, an app available for a variety of smartphones, including Android, Windows, iPhone, and Blackberry. Along with working with the app, the new parking meters also accept debit and credit cards, cash, and coins.

One of the benefits of providing drivers with smartphone-connected parking meters is that people no longer have to worry about rushing back to their vehicles to feed the meters. Using the app, people can add more time right from their phone. When cities install new features and services, they can use poster printing to advertise the new systems and to help residents get used to the new options available.

Drivers who want to use the new parking meter app need to sign up for an account at the Parkmobile website. Registering allows a person to pay for parking using the app, by making a phone call, or by visiting the website. The app can send a driver a reminder to add more time or move the car 15 minutes before time expires.

So far, the new parking meters are located throughout downtown Yonkers, as well as in the Engine Lot #10 and the Walsh Lot.
