Teens from Yonkers area help raise the roof for family in need

A number of teenagers in the Westchester area, including those from Mount Vernon, Eastchester, and Yonkers, learned the value of helping others this month.

The teens helped to raise money for the local Habitat of Humanity, collecting more than $5,000 to build a new home for a couple in need. To raise the money, the teenagers sold two-by-four wood boards to members of their community.

The couple set to receive the house both served as part of the Marines in Iraq. They met while on active duty and serving the U.S. Although the teenagers have raised a sufficient amount of money, fundraisers can consider using local printing companies to spread the word about projects like the upcoming building of the home.

The teens will do more than raise money for the project; they will also help Habitat for Humanity actually build the ‘Welcome Home’ house for the couple on October 18.

Jim Killoran, the executive director for the Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, told the Yonkers Daily Voice:

“We have thousands of youths who help us, and we encourage every youth in this county to learn to build and help others have a home.”

Those in the area interested in sparing some time for projects like this one can find out how to do so on the Habitat for Humanity website.
