NY state helps to save carousel near Yonkers

Near the end of 2018, New York state stepped in to offer financial support for the repair and restoration of the carousel at Rye Playland, near Yonkers.

The historic ride was a highlight of the amusement park for children and children-at-heart, but a fire two years ago at the carousel caused significant damage to the structure of the ride and to the horses, many of which were carved by hand.

At first, the future of the carousel was unclear, as the cost of repairing the damage to the ride, which included water damage and damage to its roof, was high.

NY State's $450,000 grant will be coupled with money from the ride's insurance policy to help cover the bulk of the repair costs.

Organizations that receive funding from state or local governments can use Stationery printing to create Signs thanking the government for its financial support.

The total cost of the restoration of the carousel has not been announced, but the goal is to bring the ride back to its original appearance and design. Peter Tartaglia, the deputy commissioner for Westchester County Parks and Recreation, told CBS that the goal is to keep the carousel in its original building, but to make the building look completely new.

Initially, the goal was to reopen the carousel by 2020. With the funding from NY state, officials anticipate having the project completed sooner.
