New York city renames street in honor of comedy legend

Yonkers has decided to celebrate one of its famous sons by renaming Main Street, between Hawthorne and Riverdale Avenues, as ‘Sid Caesar Way’.

Caesar was a pioneer of primetime television, remembered for the ‘Your Show of Shows’ and ‘Caeser's Hour’ sketch comedy and variety programs that aired live on TV throughout the 1950s.

For people in Yonkers, Caesar, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 91, was a familiar face. He grew up in the city and graduated from Yonkers High School in 1939.

The ceremony to rename the street took place on Monday, November 3. Mayor Mike Spano, actors Renee Taylor and Joe Bologna, and Caesar's daughter, Karen, participated in the event.

According to News 12 Westchester, Caesar's daughter was moved by the renaming, saying:

"It's very touching to me.

"I wish he was here. I wish my mom was here. I look forward to coming back and seeing this."

In addition to the ceremony, Yonkers can also spring for banner printing. Banners hung along the renamed street can let passersby know of the name change.

During the four seasons of its transmission, Caesar's ‘Your Show of Shows’ had an average audience of about 60 million viewers. When it went off the air in 1954, the program had aired a total of 160 episodes.
