Hospital in Yonkers proposes building affordable housing apartment building

To increase the opportunities for affordable housing, particularly for people with mental illness or for veterans, Yonkers-based St. Joseph's Medical Center has proposed building an 80-unit apartment complex.

The project would cost about $30m and be located in the downtown area, at School Street and Nepperhan Avenue. Currently, the area isn't zoned for the type of construction the hospital wants to build or for the type of parking the building would provide. The hospital's proposal is currently under review by the zoning board, but it has not taken any action yet.

If built, the complex would replace two existing vacant lots and three buildings. A portion of the building would be dedicated to apartments for people with mental illnesses, but who are able to live on their own. The remaining units will all be affordable apartments. Priority will be given to veterans and to Yonkers residents who apply to live in the housing. Nearly 50 of the studio apartments will be specially dedicated to residents in recovery.

Hospitals and affordable housing programs such as this can use Mailing services to connect with potential residences, and to educate the public about the need for such buildings and programs.

One of the areas the new building will focus on is safety. There will be security at the front entrance of the building and all applicants will be carefully screened before being accepted. A support staff team will be on hand 24 hours a day to provide care and service to residents who need it.
