It might not be easy to be green, but DeCicco & Sons Markets is going to give it a try. The grocery chain, which has seven locations in the Yonkers area, recently announced that it would be eliminating single-use plastic Bags at all of its outlets.
The plastic Bags will be gone from the stores quickly -- the chain wants to completely eliminate them within a week.
Stores that are planning on making considerable changes or introducing green initiatives can use graphic design to let people know about the change. To help shoppers with the transition away from plastic Bags, DeCicco & Sons will be offering paper Bags, as well as encouraging shoppers to bring in their own reusable Bags. Those who do this will get a credit at the register.
Single-use plastic Bags are one the plastic items most often found in the environment and in coastline clean-ups, according to statistics from the United Nations. DeCicco & Sons used around 22 million Bags last year.
The store's owners determined that getting rid of the Bags was the single change they could make that would have the greatest positive environmental effect, but DeCicco & Sons’ green efforts do not end there. It seven stores currently use LED lighting, have solar panels on the roofs, and doors on refrigerator cases to help lower energy use.
