Two falcons, who call the top of the Tappan Zee Bridge home, have gotten their names.
The two birds hatched in April, in the nest box on the top of the bridge. Soon after the birth of the birds, classes from schools in Yonkers and the surrounding area began submitting names to the 2017 Falcon Naming Contest.
The outreach team in charge of the contest made a list of the top 10 submissions from schools and created an online poll to allow the public to vote on the names. Over the course of a week, thousands of people voted for their preferred names.
The winners ended up being Tarrytalon and Puente. Puente received the most votes, while Tarrytalon got eight less. The two runners-up were Jimmy Falcon and Flappin Zee.
Organizations that put together contests for younger students can use Stationery printers to create certificates that recognize the students' hard work.
The team behind the falcon name contest visited the classrooms that the winning names came from and presented the students with certificates. Emily Alvarez, a fourth grader in the Dual Language Program at Claremont Elementary School, was responsible for the name "Puente."
Second grade student Andrew Wenzel, who attends Concord Road Elementary School, also received a certificate for the name "Tarrytalon."
The two birds are expected to remain in the nest box on top of the bridge for at least a few more weeks, until they have the hunting skills needed to head out on their own.
