Coyotes spotted in Yonkers

Many people wouldn't expect to see coyotes roaming around the suburbs of New York, but a number of the animals have been seen throughout Westchester County.

Following spottings in Peekskill, Rye, Cortlandt, and Greenburgh, the dogs have made their way south and have most recently been seen in Yonkers.

A homeowner living in Yonkers recorded the coyote as the dog wandered through the backyards in a neighborhood.

Communities that are experiencing an uptick in wild animal sightings, whether the animals are coyotes, bears, or escaped zoo animals, can use flyer printing to educate people about what to do if they see an animal.

People in Yonkers are concerned about the safety of area children and pets. If a person does see a coyote out and about, the best thing to do is make a lot of noise and to throw objects, such as rocks and sticks. The goal is to appear like a predator, something the coyote should fear.

Additionally, families in Yonkers should keep a close eye on any pets. Pets should only be fed indoors and should be kept on a leash when outdoors. It is also a good idea not to fill bird feeders, as coyotes tend to be attracted to the birds and other critters that use the feeders.

Fences can help keep out the coyotes, as long as they are buried at least six inches into the ground.
